7 Warm Weather Tips For Dog Owners

cute dogThough the dog days of summer are almost over, Tampa sees warm temperatures year round.  Its important for dog owners to remember the Florida heat can take a toll on your dog.  Dogs have higher body temperatures than humans and can get hot very quickly.  Here are seven tips to help your dog beat the summer heat.

  1. Never leave your dog in a parked car for any period of time. On a warm day, the temperature in a car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes.
  2. Make sure your dog has access to a cool place to rest during the day.  Inside is always best.
  3. Just like you, your dogs can become dehydrated very quickly.  Always have plenty of water available for your dog.
  4. Try to exercise during the cooler times of day.  If you are out with your dog in the heat of the day remember that pavement gets very hot and can burn your dog's paws.
  5. Dogs can get sunburned too. If you are headed to the beach or are going to be in the sun for an extended time, apply sunscreen to your dog’s nose and ears.
  6. Fleas and ticks are a year-round concern in South Florida.  Be sure to use a flea preventative every month.
  7. If your dog does become over-heated, lower his body temperature immediately by applying ice packs or cold towels to his neck, head or chest.  Give him cool water, and bring him to the veterinarian immediately.
